The chemistry department at Brandeis University has nationally recognized faculty with research strengths in the areas that include: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, biophysical chemistry, and chemical biology. The program includes course work, seminar participation, research, and teaching. Each student may be admitted into either the master’s (master of arts or the master of science) or the doctoral program.
Applicants’ undergraduate curricula should include courses in physics, mathematics and inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry.
The doctoral program normally includes a basic set of courses in the student’s own area of interest, supplemented by advanced courses in chemistry and, when appropriate, biochemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics. Students in the Ph.D. program are eligible to participate in the interdepartmental Graduate Program in Quantitative Biology, which provides training in new research fields that cross the traditional boundaries between the life sciences and the physical sciences.
Master of Science
The Master of Science degree is designed for advanced students who do not wish to earn a Ph.D. degree. The minimum residence requirement for the MS degree is two years.
Applicants to the master’s program will initially be admitted only to the MA program, with transfer into the second year of the MS program contingent on the their first year performance.
Master of Arts
The minimum residence requirement for the MA degree is one year.
