Biochemistry & Biophysics – Graduate

The Biochemistry & Biophysics program offers advanced education in the principles and practice of macromolecular chemistry, mechanism, and structure. It is the graduate component of the Biochemistry department.

This program is an interdepartmental graduate training program with faculty drawn from the Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics departments. Faculty participating in this program share the conviction that the coherent operation of living cells, and its disruption in disease, is ultimately understandable in terms of the chemistry and physics of biological macromolecules.

Applicants should have strong backgrounds in the physical sciences with undergraduate majors in any related fields such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, or physics.

Ph.D. Program

The Ph.D. program in Biochemistry and Biophysics is designed to provide students with an understanding of the mechanisms that control the workings of biological macromolecules. In addition to experimental research work, Ph.D. students are required to complete formal course work in advanced biochemistry and physical biochemistry and biophysics.

Master of Science

The Master of Science program is intended to give students a substantial understanding of the chemical and molecular events in biological processes and experience in research. The program is divided among formal course work, biochemical and biophysical techniques, and a research project.
